The Challenge

The central challenge in a distributed portfolio is identifying locations where network capacity, connection economics, land availability, planning risk and commercial fundamentals align. A strong substation can be undermined by unsuitable land; a strong land position can be undermined by network constraints; and both can be weakened by planning, access, environmental or competing-development risks.

OnyX’s Approach

  • Uses a data-led origination process to screen Essential Energy’s network and identify connection points with attractive characteristics for distribution-connected storage.
  • Combines network opportunity with spatial, planning, land-title and development data to identify suitable properties around shortlisted connection points.
  • Progresses shortlisted locations through landowner engagement, site inspection, preliminary connection enquiries, commercial negotiation and development due diligence.
  • Secures a planning pathway for both the Stage 1 BESS and future solar PV, preserving the ability to deploy solar when daytime market pricing supports the investment case.
  • Standardises major elements of development across the portfolio, including BESS configuration, PCS selection, planning documentation, consultant scopes and OEM engagement.
  • Applies development gates so capital is progressively concentrated into projects demonstrating the strongest combination of connection capacity, planning viability, land control and commercial return.

Development Outcome

The NSW portfolio demonstrates how OnyX combines network intelligence, data analytics, land acquisition, staged project design and repeatable development processes to create a scalable pipeline of hybrid energy opportunities. The result is a portfolio designed to be commercially responsive: four-hour BESS can proceed first, while solar PV remains permitted and ready for deployment when future daytime energy prices improve.
