Data Engineer – Energy & Infrastructure Intelligence
Build and own the data foundation that turns grid, land, planning and market information into reliable, decision-ready intelligence for the business.
About OnyX
OnyX Corporations is a renewable energy development and advisory business working across solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and hybrid energy projects in Australia, with a growing focus on digital infrastructure and data centre site development.
Every development decision we make depends on data — grid capacity, land parcels, planning overlays, environmental constraints, market activity and commercial information. Much of it is scattered across public portals, network operator maps, regulatory documents, spreadsheets and PDFs, in inconsistent formats and of varying quality.
We are now looking for a Data Engineer to build and own the data foundation that turns this information into reliable, decision-ready intelligence for the business.
The Role
You will design, build and run OnyX’s data platform, working across structured and unstructured data from many different sources to derive insights that drive project origination, feasibility and commercial decisions. Key responsibilities include:
- Data acquisition — sourcing data from public datasets, APIs, network operator portals, government and regulatory publications, web sources, documents and internal systems.
- Data cleansing — standardising, validating, de-duplicating and enriching messy, incomplete and inconsistent data, both structured and unstructured.
- Data analysis — exploring datasets to identify patterns, gaps and opportunities, and translating findings into clear insights for project and commercial teams.
- Data governance — establishing data standards, metadata, lineage, quality controls, access management and documentation so our data can be trusted and reused.
- Data pipeline development — designing and building automated, scalable ETL/ELT pipelines and data models in our cloud data warehouse.
- Operations and maintenance — monitoring, maintaining and improving pipelines and datasets, managing refresh schedules, resolving data issues and keeping the platform reliable.
- Geospatial analysis — processing and analysing spatial data such as land parcels, planning zones and overlays, electricity network assets and environmental constraints to support site screening.
- Unstructured data extraction — using Python, AI and LLM tools to extract structured information from PDFs, reports, maps and web content.
- Reporting and visualisation — building dashboards, maps and reports that make data accessible to non-technical stakeholders.
- Integrating new datasets and tools into OnyX’s internal platform and systems, and documenting repeatable processes.
- Supporting other data, research and technology initiatives across the business as needs arise.
- Handling all company information and client data with strict confidentiality.
Essential
- Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, GIS or a related discipline.
- Relevant professional experience in data engineering, analytics engineering or a similar role.
- Strong SQL and Python skills.
- Experience designing and building ETL/ELT pipelines and working with cloud data warehouses.
- Experience working with both structured and unstructured data from multiple sources (APIs, web data, spreadsheets, documents).
- Understanding of data modelling, data quality and data governance principles.
- Ability to independently solve problems, prioritise and manage multiple workstreams.
- Strong communication and documentation skills, with the ability to explain technical work to non-technical stakeholders.
Highly Valued
Experience working with data in the energy, infrastructure, utilities or property sectors will be highly regarded. Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:
- Google Cloud Platform and BigQuery
- GIS tools and libraries — QGIS, ArcGIS, PostGIS, GeoPandas, GDAL
- Spatial datasets such as cadastre, planning zones and overlays, and electricity network data
- Workflow orchestration and transformation tools — Airflow, dbt, Prefect or similar
- Power BI, Looker Studio or other visualisation tools
- LLMs and AI tools for document parsing and data extraction
- Web scraping and API integration
- Git, version control and CI/CD practices
The Person We Want
We are looking for someone who:
- Takes ownership and drives work forward.
- Can work independently without needing constant direction.
- Enjoys turning messy, incomplete data into something clean, reliable and useful.
- Notices inconsistencies and asks why.
- Communicates clearly and raises issues early.
- Understands both the technical detail and the business decision the data supports.
- Is comfortable working in a fast-moving, growing business.
- Is open to using AI, automation and new tools to improve productivity.
At OnyX, we operate with high trust, low bureaucracy and high accountability. We focus on outcomes and quality rather than how busy someone appears.
Why Join OnyX?
You will work closely with project decision-makers and see your work directly shape which sites we pursue, how projects are assessed and where the business invests.
You will gain exposure across renewable energy and data centre development, grid and network analysis, planning, land and commercial strategy.
As OnyX grows, this role has the opportunity to define our data architecture from the ground up and progressively take greater ownership of the data and analytics function.
Location
Melbourne, Victoria — Office: 1 Nicholson Street, East Melbourne.
Occasional site visits and project travel may be required.

How to Apply
Please submit your CV to info@onyxcorporations.com together with a short response to the following:
Imagine you need to build a dataset for screening development sites. Substation capacity data is published by three different network operators, each in a different format and updated at different frequencies. It needs to be combined with land parcel and planning overlay data, and kept current. How would you design, validate and maintain the pipeline behind this dataset?
We are not looking for a perfect technical answer. We want to understand how you structure a problem, make design trade-offs and build something reliable that others can use.
